A new catalogue price does not explain an existing renewal

A dating service changes its public subscription price and updates the checkout page. Existing members may still have different renewal dates, introductory offers, billing intervals and contractual terms. Applying the new catalogue value to every renewal can disconnect the amount collected from the proposition each member understood. The pricing project therefore needs a separate workstream for existing subscribers.

This article proposes a practical evidence and billing workflow. It does not determine whether a particular price variation is legally permitted or whether fresh consent is required in every jurisdiction. Those questions depend on the relevant terms and obligations. The operational objective is to implement the reviewed decision accurately and make the member's available choices understandable before collection.

Use transparency as a design requirement

In its published Xbox subscription intervention, the UK's CMA identified clearer information on price increases and the ability to turn off renewal as improvements. That historical example concerns another service and does not automatically establish dating-platform requirements. It provides a useful prompt to examine the relationship between a changed price, understandable notice and a usable account action.

Define the complete proposed change. A higher price may accompany different messaging allowances, visibility features or membership duration. Members need to understand the relevant combination, not just the new monthly equivalent. Product, legal, support and billing owners should agree one version of the offer before notices are sent or billing configuration is changed.

Map the affected subscription population

Create a cohort list showing the current plan, existing amount, billing currency, interval, renewal date and proposed replacement terms. Identify members on fixed commitments, promotions or previously negotiated arrangements. Do not assume a plan identifier alone tells the full story. A historic discount or account-level adjustment can change what the member has actually been paying.

Check whether the platform itself controls the billing relationship. App-store purchases or other distribution arrangements may have their own change process. A notice sent by the dating platform should not promise an account action that must be performed elsewhere. Route each cohort through the process that applies to its actual subscription, with clear responsibility for exceptions.

Keep the notice tied to the contract version

Store the notice content, intended recipient, send time and applicable terms version. Include the old and proposed amount, relevant renewal date and the route for declining further renewal where appropriate. Avoid burying the price change within a promotional campaign whose main purpose is to advertise new features. A member should be able to identify the financial decision without interpreting marketing language.

Track communication failures separately from completed sends. An email service reporting acceptance does not establish that the member read the message. Decide how invalid addresses and failed notifications affect the next step under the reviewed policy. Support needs access to the actual notice version, rather than a generic screenshot of what the latest campaign looks like.

Implement the required member decision precisely

Where the reviewed process requires an affirmative member action, preserve the action, time and offer version to which it relates. A login, profile update or unrelated feature click should not be reinterpreted as acceptance of a changed billing arrangement. Make the relevant choice explicit and ensure the recorded outcome reaches the billing system before it schedules collection.

Where the applicable process permits a change following notice, do not describe the member as having expressly accepted merely because no cancellation was received. Accurate language matters for internal records as well as customer communication. Distinguish notice, acknowledgment, acceptance and continued service. Each describes a different event and may support a different conclusion during a complaint review.

Test cancellation around the renewal boundary

Verify that a member can find and complete the relevant cancellation or renewal-stop action. Confirm the effective date and remaining access period in plain language. A successful account screen should correspond to the billing scheduler's state. If systems synchronize asynchronously, monitor the interval and handle requests that arrive near a collection cutoff through a documented exception process.

Check whether a failed payment retry can restore a subscription that was already cancelled. Retries should remain tied to the original renewal obligation and respect intervening account decisions. Preserve the amount associated with that obligation rather than reading the newest price from the catalogue. This prevents a technical retry from becoming an unexplained second pricing change.

Review outcomes beyond renewal revenue

Compare complaints, cancellations, failed collections and completed refunds across affected cohorts. A lower renewal rate may reflect members making an informed choice; a rise in complaints after successful collection may indicate confusing notice or a broken cancellation route. Treat those patterns differently. Revenue alone cannot tell the team whether the change was understood or implemented correctly.

Give support a concise evidence view containing the member's earlier terms, notice, relevant account actions and payment outcome. Restrict access to sensitive dating-profile information that is unnecessary for the billing case. A payment complaint should be resolvable without exposing unrelated personal activity. Use the resulting cases to correct the workflow, not merely to improve the wording of responses.

What it means to Merchants

Treat a price change as a subscription migration with clear member choices and versioned evidence. Map existing contracts, send understandable notices and implement the required decision accurately in billing. Test cancellation and retries near renewal, then review complaints and remedies alongside revenue. A dating platform gains a more defensible payment history when it can show the actual offer and account events behind each changed charge.
